  • There was a lot of talk and supposed soul searching going on when Jon and Kate called it quits. I guess this is one way to go about it.

Hailey Glassman is head-over-heels for newly single Jon Gosselin — and his soon-to-be-ex-wife, Kate, is furious! Glassman, 22, details her relationship with the “Jon & Kate Plus 8″ star to People magazine, including how she can’t believe her luck in dating the 32-year-old octodad. The New York native denies rumors of an engagement but dishes about her and Jon’s relationship, saying they watch movies, play pool and cook dinner together at the reality star’s new Manhattan digs.

No need for Gosselin to sit on the sidelines. I understand that part. But it does raise questions. Especially when

Risqué photos from the 22-year-old’s Facebook account surfaced Wednesday, revealing Glassman as a less-than-maternal figure. The New York native is constantly captured in skimpy clothing with either a drink or cigarette in hand – as well as other smoking paraphernalia. The best shot: Glassman appears to have fallen head-first into a potted plant – and looks like she truly can’t get up.

That page has been taken down according to The Daily News.  Of course Glassman is not the only one who has fallen head over heels for Jon minus 9. Kate Major a reporter for Star Magazine quit her job citing a conflict of interest.

Not so fast says Mr Gosselin:

According to Radar, the 32-year-old dad told a friend that he was never intimate with the gossip reporter. “Oh my God, I can’t believe she did this to me,” Gosselin told a Radar source. “What do I do? She’s totally [expletive] me over!” Major had come out with a statement Wednesday night saying unequivocally that the pair were romantically involved.

However this turns out imo one thing is clear. For all his previous protesting, Jon sure does seem to enjoy the spotlight.

  • This is a follow up to the whole Jon and Kate Gosselin drama. Solid piece by Wilfred Langmaid at The Daily Gleaner:

By contrast, much of reality TV – or “non-fiction improvised drama”, if you prefer – is driven by real people who are getting exploited and hurt.

As I see it, this is not far down the slippery slope from peering at a crash scene.

We peer at their joy and their hope, but we also see the deceit and we witness the very real pain.

The fact that it is real makes it visceral and rather transfixing.

That is the secret – and the danger.

There was an old adage in the newspaper business that went something like “bad news sells and good news is no news.” Reality TV in many ways is carrying on the tradition.

What I’m struck by is how many people enthusiastically jump into the arena and let the camera expose every facet of their relationship. Then find out that it can be relentless, sometimes unforgiving and a bit of a troublemaker.  For that go read Rob Sheffield’s Ruined By Reality TV and Rob chronicled this before the Jon and Kate explosion.

I think reality tv is here to stay and the fact that  documenting (and in some ways causing) the Gosselins marriage woes has led to a ratings bonanza will probably embolden it for a long time to come.

  • I had a feeling:

They’ve already gotten massive publicity which gives the show a full head of steam coming into the new season.

Lynette Rice at Entertainment Weekly. (Emphasis mine) :

The heavily promoted fifth-season premiere of Jon & Kate Plus 8 posted record ratings for TLC on Memorial Day.

The hour-long episode — in which tabloid cover queen Kate Gosselin admitted, “I have a lot of anger…this is not what I envisioned for us” — attracted a whopping 9.8 million viewers, which more than doubled the audience that tuned into the show’s season 4 finale in March (4.6 million).

Early estimates also reveal that the premiere, which lured unprecedented numbers of women aged 18-34 and women 18-49, was TLC’s (and Jon & Kate’s) most-watched episode ever.

Of course the best thing they could do for their relationship and the children is resolve their differences.

However as the overnight ratings have shown, the worst thing that could happen to TLC is if they resolve their differences.

  • And it is not pretty. Eric Deggans of The St Petersburg Times:

It’s hard to believe a family which has made a career of exposing their inner lives on an unscripted TV series has the gumption to complain about paparazzi or insist their marital problems are private business.

But the return tonight of TLC’s inexplicable hit Jon & Kate Plus 8felt like a 75-minute dissertation on the hypocrisy of the unscripted TV game and the distastefulness of watching an unsavory couple’s relationship die onscreen.

I think that last line describing the couple as unsavory is uncalled for. They were offered an opportunity to better their economic status by leaps and bounds so they took it. And with 8 kids who can blame them? I guess many people would do the same.

Having said that the Gosselins are really in a tough position to cry foul at this point. They walked into this with their eyes wide open. When everything was flowing their way no one complained.

Yes Mr Gosselin has let it be known he was getting tired of the show. While this may have been on his mind for a while it seemed to only really surface as season 4 was coming to a close.  In the meantime Kate is by all accounts having the time of her life.

But Deggans scathing (and it is) review is an example of classic media.  It’s a technique that they have used for years and it never fails. Build up someone as much as possible and then tear them down with everything they’ve got.

The only difference is now the  reality TV participants hand the media the keys to the bulldozer.

Update: Eileen Fredes at Newsday takes a more even handed approach. Plus check out the poll.

  • Lot of focus lately on Jon and Kate Gosselin. If you don’t know who they are, that’s the couple with eight kids and their own reality tv show on The Learning Channel.

Accusations of infidelity are being hurled around on both sides.  True or is this a carefully scripted maneuver to get more viewers? They’ve already gotten massive publicity which gives the show a full head of steam coming into the new season.

Jessica Carlson has some ideas on the matter.
