Identity Theft and Fraud

Count The Ways

unlockedA little while back the Associated Press reported a story concerning a family in the Pacific Northwest that posed as tax preparers and used stolen identities to go on buying sprees across several states that included million dollar homes and luxury vehicles.

That’s just one of the many identity theft techniques floating around. Here’s a few more:

1. Credit Card Skimming

2. Mail Fraud

3. Shoulder Surfing

Somebody watches you directly in public when you are entering your PIN at an ATM machine, filling out an application or any thing else that may expose your personal information.

4. Phishing

5. Dumpster Diving

Like the old saying goes one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Identity thieves go thru your garbage hoping to find some of your personal information that has not been shredded. It can be anything from junk credit card offers to obsolete financial statements and or receipts.

6. The Jury Duty Scam

Someone calls you and says that a bench warrant has been issued for your arrest because you failed to report for jury duty. When you tell them that you never received a summons they start pumping you for your personal information all under the guise of verifying their “court records.”

7. Pharming

8. The Sweetheart Scam

This one directly targets senior citizens (one of the most vulnerable groups when it comes to identity theft).Someone offers to run errands or do chores around the house for the express purpose of taking control of the victim’s finances.

9. ATM Rigging

10. Ghosting

Someone steals the identity of a deceased individual. They may also take their place in society.

11. Cloning

This one is straight out of a science fiction movie.

Types Of Identity Theft:
Identity Cloning

12. Employment Identity Theft

Your co worker or someone working out of resource steals your information. What if you are looking for a job? Just as good. Thieves place a fake ad for a job that does not exist. Answer the ad and watch the thief pump as much information out of the job seeker as possible.

This only scratches the surface. What’s makes it even more ominous is identity thieves are coming up with new ways all the time.

P.S. and don’t forget the gift that keeps on giving.
