Grant money aims to stop Austin teen dating violence

Category news, safety and well being, teen dating — woody45 @ 7:01 am

One month ago it was The Family Violence Law Center in Oakland which received grant money. This time it’s The Safe Place out of Austin Texas. Mary Ann Roser @ The American Statesman:

SafePlace has won a four-year grant of up to $1 million to see whether educating students at four Northeast Austin middle schools and training nurses in all district schools will reduce the number of abusive teen relationships and curb sexual harassment and bullying. Children who belong to the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Capital Area also will be educated as part of the grant.

Teen date violence up

Category dating, news, teen dating — woody45 @ 8:21 am

This is a global issue.  Cassandra Chew | The  Straits Times

WHEN Shanti, 17, met Raj, 19, at their neighbourhood McDonald’s through mutual friends, she thought she had found her Mr Right.

He pursued her ardently, sent constant text messages and met her every day after school.

But six months on, things went horribly wrong. He began hitting her and even threatened her at knife point.

Two years later, she turned to the Centre for Promoting Alternatives to Violence (Pave) in Ang Mo Kio, seeking help to end the relationship.

The numbers compared to the US are minimal but the percentages are pretty staggering.

Grant to help fight teen date abuse

Category dating, news, teen dating — woody45 @ 9:32 am

About a week ago we posted a video concerning teen dating violence and the not so good grade The State of Wisconsin received when it comes to handling this issue.

Kevin Fagan at The SF Gate:

The Family Violence Law Center in Oakland has been awarded $1 million to be used over the next four years in studying how to prevent violence during teen dating.

The grant is part of one of the most extensive efforts ever undertaken nationally to tackle the thorny problem of how and why teenagers abuse each other on dates and in intimate relationships. Similar research will be conducted at 11 organizations, from Boston to Los Angeles, with the goal of engaging youths from a wide variety of ethnicities and backgrounds.

Hopefully Wisconsin and many other places can benefit from this study.
